The economic importance of piassava is in the extraction of its industrial fibres, highlighting the manufacture of brooms, car seat filling and brushes. The residue obtained following cleaning, which is known as pulp, tape or dregs, is used to cover houses in rural and urban settings. This product is currently well used for covering kiosks in the leisure areas of farms, clubs and squares. It is also used as thermal insulation.
The product is presented in bundles of varying weights. The bundles with long fibres are traded on the external market while the short ones, called “stubs”, are used in the broom industry. The cover or pulp is used to cover kiosks and huts, which raises their value at some times of the year, when they can be sold for the same price as long fibres.
