The Natural Fibres Industry Union in the State of Bahia brings together companies in the areas of natural fibres, mainly sisal, piassava and coconut. It defends labour relations in the segment, has contributed to developing the sector and promoting natural fi bres around the world. It offers support for relations between associates, contributors and government together with businessmen in the area.
Sindifi bras also plays a fundamental role at an international level. Its directors seek to play an infl uential role together with international organizations that define and suggest global and regional policies, such as the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), Common Fund for Commodities (CFC) and UN Industrial Development Organization (Unido).
It is also at the forefront in the world private sector, having become the fi rst president of the recently-formed International Natural Fibres Organization (INFO), whose head offi ce is in Amsterdam. The partnerships and exchange of experiences with various producing countries and consumers also bring advantages to Brazilian producers because of access to new technology, varieties and handling techniques.
Nationally, Sindifi bras leads a movement to create a Sectoral Natural Fibres Council, within the scope of the Ministry of Agriculture and operates as a democratic and participative forum for the main private and governmental agents, where policies for developing productive chains in the sector are produced.
